It was so exciting to shoot this family last week, as it was my first family in-home lifestyle session. Boy am I grateful for friends who don’t mind me invading their home to practice! Their boys Nathan & Andrew are adorable & they were so fun to play with. Even though kids can be a little crazy to shoot, I love playing with them & talking to them & getting to know them a little.
The shot of Nathan above was my favorite of the bunch. When reviewing the images, Nathan’s mom told me that this scrunching up & cuddling into himself is something he has done since he was a tiny baby. I love that I could capture this moment for them. And I love how soulful his little face is & his connection with the camera.
Here are a couple other favorites from the session:
It was a fun session & a HUGE learning experience. Although I got some images I love, I also didn’t make as many good photos as I had hoped/expected. There were some I liked but where I didn’t quite nail the focus or where I was a little too close (resulting in chopping off limbs or heads or other body parts that should have been in the frame) or where the composition or the moment was just a little lacking. And there were a lot of images of the same thing, even after I had made “the shot,” when I should have moved to a different perspective or a different activity. This shoot also made me recognize that I need to develop my ability to direct the shoot a little more. I think it’s going to be a process to find my own personal balance between directing & just shooting as things happen naturally.
All-in-all, a success. And I can’t wait for my next in-home family shoot!
